Actress and producer Funke Akindele has announced that her upcoming film, “Everybody Loves Jenifa,” is set to be released in December. However, she didn’t provide additional details about the film’s release, such as whether it will debut in theaters or on streaming platforms.
Everybody Loves Jenifa may not be unconnected to the comedy franchise Jenifa, which metamorphosed into The Return of Jenifa, and a TV series, Jenifa’s Diary.
The inaugural film in the series featured Funke Akindele as Jenifa, a village girl who journeyed to the city in search of fortune. Along the way, she became entangled with a group of unscrupulous women, leading to a series of challenges and triumphs.
Jenifa received four nominations at the 2009 Africa Movie Academy Awards, including Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Original Soundtrack, and Best Nigerian Film. It featured Iyabo Ojo, Ronke Odusanya, Eniola Badmus, Mosunmola Filani, and Ireti Osayemi.
The TV series starred Funke Akindele, Juliana Olayode, Lota Chukwu, Paschaline Alex, Lolo1, Falz, Joy Nice, and Michael Uba.
Funke Akindele’s latest work, “A Tribe Called Judah,” premiered in cinemas in December 2023 and broke a box office record within 21 days of release. It became the first Nollywood film to gross N1bn.
The movie’s success surpassed that of Akindele’s previous films, “Battle on Buka Street” (N668.4m) and “Omo Ghetto” (N636.1m), which currently hold the second and third positions for highest-grossing films at the Nigerian box office, respectively.
