‘I Lost Movie Roles Because People Tagged Me Uglly, But Thank God For Who I Am Today’ – Funke Akindele

Funke Akindele, the acclaimed Nollywood actress and filmmaker, has shared her experience of facing rejection for major movie roles during her early acting days due to being labeled as “not fine.” Speaking on the TokeMoments podcast hosted by Toke Makinwa, Akindele disclosed how her physical appearance led to her being overlooked for significant roles, even in Yoruba indigenous films.

Despite her talent, Akindele recounted losing out on opportunities because of perceptions about her physique. She expressed gratitude for actress Iyabo Ojo’s support, revealing that Ojo intervened multiple times on her behalf when filmmakers dismissed her based on her looks.

The ‘Jenifa Diary’ producer /actress said producers were giving her just minor roles which made her cry.

“I remember people telling me, ‘You are not fine. You don’t have ass. You don’t have boobs. You will not be in this film,” she recalled.

“And, I remember crying . A lot of times I would cry, break down, get into the bathroom and cry.”
